It‘s hard to find two places located close to each other that are this different. The formerly run down industrial harbor town of Bilbao, at the time called ’the hole’ all over Spain, has been reinvented by the rulers as a super modern tourist destination full of arts and culture. Then on the other hand there is the historic coastal resort town of San Sebastián which remains unaltered and holds onto traditions , like the very typical ‘gastronomic societies’ that are well known for only accepting male members. Even if it doesn’t seem as lively, you’ll always find vibrant life in the streets and on the wonderful beaches, throughout the day or night and the not so old fashioned tradition of surfing has probably had a positive impact on that..
I shot the story in Summer 2013 for Mobil magazine.
